In 1994, leaders from the Minnesota Private College Council and the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation came together to create a new scholarship for students who felt called to address injustices in their communities. That program, the Phillips Scholars, recently celebrated its 30th anniversary at an uplifting event attended by more than 100 alumni and guests.
The Phillips Scholars Program offers needs-based scholarships for students at Minnesota private colleges along with funding for a community service project. This combination of financial aid and project support enables participants to launch their own efforts or expand existing social justice initiatives in their communities. Eight to 10 students become Phillips Scholars each year.
At the 30th anniversary event on August 8, program alumni shared how the experience of designing and implementing a community service project contributed to their vocational and personal growth. Two of those stories are captured in the videos below.
With each new cohort of Phillips Scholars, the Foundation’s staff and directors are reminded of the boundless energy and determination young people show when they set themselves to the task of making the world a better place. You inspire us, Scholars! Thanks to all 167 of you who have participated so far. We’re looking forward to supporting many more world-changers in the future.
Finally, this work is only possible through the exceptional diligence and leadership of the Minnesota Private College Council, and we are grateful to the Council’s staff for sustaining the excellence of this effort. It has been our honor to fund this exceptional program for the past 30 years.
