Hart Horner

Bridging & Communications Specialist, Eastside Financial Center: Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota

Hart is a recent graduate of Carleton College, where he majored in sociology and anthropology. After writing for two professional newspapers, he joined VISTA to learn about nonprofit communications and work toward economic justice. His other passions include quilting, books, magazines and cities. He is a Seattle transplant and enjoys exploring St. Paul by bike and bus.

Nadya Bucklin

Family and Community Engagement Liaison, Friendship Academy of the Arts

Nadya recently graduated from the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities, with a degree in Global Studies and a minor in Russian Language. In her free time she enjoys reading, watching foreign films, studying language and having good conversations with friends—preferably over a cup of coffee. She chose C3 Twin Cities VISTA because she believes in the importance of public service. During her year with VISTA she hopes to gain new skills that will contribute to her professional development and will prepare her for graduate school and a future career.

Jon Bellefeuille

Educational Innovation Coordinator, Greater Twin Cities United Way

Jon was born in Minnesota and has lived in different cities across the state, including St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Mankato. He graduated with his Bachelors of Science in Sociology from Minnesota State University Mankato in the spring of 2015. His VISTA assignment is with the Greater Twin Cities United Way, specifically working in the Career Academies program. During his service he hopes to learn more about the nonprofit sector and about the current challenges facing Minnesota’s communities. During his free-time he likes to spend time with his fiancé, two cats, and his family, as well as watch documentaries and play arcade games.

Jay Rathell

Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Hiawatha Academies

Jay Rathell, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but likes to think he’s from everywhere. He graduated with a degree in web development, but later realizing this wasn’t the career he wanted. For Jay, typing code isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Fortunately, he found his passion in the digital marketing world. He has two beautiful children (girls) and a fantastic wife. As a family, they consider themselves and everyone else citizens of the earth and live to travel. By this time next year, he wants to master the website/social media world. Fun Fact: Star Trek is better than Star Wars 🙂

Krystal Garvais

Social Media and Volunteer Service Liaison, Hennepin Health Foundation/MVNA

Krystal grew up in West Central Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Religious Studies. She loves libraries, book stores, and books of all kinds. Books are knowledge and when paired with a nice blanket, fresh air, contemplation, and good coffee, you cannot ask for much more. She also enjoys spending time with her family, simply enjoying each other’s company and appreciating everyone’s individual growth and learning. Krystal joined C3 Twin Cities because of a desire to learn about social issues and affect change (however small). Additionally, she hopes to apply what she learns in her year of service on a personal/academic level and apply these things to graduate studies in Psychology.

Jay Klyman

VISTA Leader, The Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of MN

Jay Klyman is a dreamer and a troublemaker. Jay was born and raised in Evanston, IL. They will always think that the great lakes are better than the 10,000 ponds in Minnesota. Jay graduated from the University of Minnesota in May and created their own major in Authentic Community Engagement. They are excited to be cheerleading for the VISTA team this year and making VISTA more accessible/welcoming for “non-traditional” applicants.

Jessie Miller

Coordinator of Community Outreach, KIPP Northstar Academy

Jessie is a recent graduate from Macalester College in St.Paul, MN but attended the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities for her first two years. She will always consider herself a Golden Gopher. Jessie majored in Sociology and Educational Studies and is passionate about creating access to college for low-income and first-generation college students. She joined C3 Twin Cities to gain nonprofit experience and to work for a cause she is passionate about and has a personal connection to.

Erin Skulski

Project Coordinator, Office to End Homelessness

Erin was born and raised in Chaska, MN. She graduated in the Fall of 2015 with an undergraduate in Anthropology and minor in History. Her VISTA assignment for the year is with Hennepin County as a Program Coordinator for the Office of Homelessness. She is hopeful that VISTA will be an opportunity to network and build community and a first step towards a career in the nonprofit sector. In her spare times she loves to cook Italian food, watch documentaries and spend time with her family, friends and dog.

Ben Suker

Program Associate, Pohlad Family Foundation

Ben has lived in or around Minneapolis his whole life and is passionate about giving back to the community he calls home. When he is not working, he enjoys running, reading, and learning. He wants to get involved in system change work especially as it pertains to educational opportunities for disenfranchised youth.

Carla Esquibel

Homeless and Highly Mobile Coordinator, Prodeo Academy

Carla is a 24 year old first generation Mexican-American and first generation college student who continues to work towards her degree in Mass Communications. She is originally from a little big town called Granite Falls, MN. She is also a licensed Esthetician and believes everyone should feel good and look beautiful on the inside and out. Carla hopes to gain from VISTA new skills with through-the-roof confidence, that will help her grow personally and professionally as a leader. To relax she enjoys pizza and a scary movie!

Raquel Arismendez

Youth Engagement Coordinator, Project for Pride in Living: LEAP Initiative

Raquel Arismendez is the Youth Engagement Coordinator for the LEAP Initiative through Project for Pride in Living. She has studied Education, Youth Studies, Child & Adolescent Psychology, and Critical Pedagogy at three different institutions over the past six years. She plans to continue working with opportunity youth and education reform throughout her professional lifetime.

Hannah Bech

Community Engagement Specialist, Venture Academy

Hannah was born and raised in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania and recently graduated from Augsburg College in Minneapolis with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. She is a Minnesota Reading Corps alumnus and is passionate about creating equitable, anti-oppressive educational opportunities for youth in Minnesota and beyond. For this reason, she chose to serve at Venture Academy through the C3 Twin Cities program, where she hopes to grow her professional skills and amplify community voices.

Mychie Yang

Youth Employment VISTA, YouthLink

Mychie Yang is from Minneapolis, MN, and a recent graduate from the College of St. Benedict with a degree in Sociology. Her hobbies are cooking, reading, and sewing. During her year of service, she hopes to gain experience in the nonprofit sector, and also gain additional skills that will help her better serve the community she lives in.

Sarah Reiter

Youth Vocational Center Coordinator, 180 Degrees

Sarah was born in Denver, CO and graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in May 2016 with degrees in French and Global Studies with a concentration in Development Studies. She enjoys baking, cooking, photography, exploring nature, and traveling. Sarah joined C3 Twin Cities to gain experience in the nonprofit world. She hopes this year will equip her with skills and knowledge that she can use in her future work in social service programs. Sarah is excited for this great opportunity to learn while serving communities in the Twin Cities.
